The Local Organising Committee of the Society for Free Radical Research Australasia conference to be held on the Gold Coast in December 2016 is committed to promoting equity and quality for its members and this is reflected in the program developed for the conference. For the first time for this society's annual conference, we are reporting equity numbers across a broad range of categories, including gender, early career stage and geographical representation. We are recommending this to be an initiative that is followed through to subsequent annual meetings of the society with a goal of improving gender balance among its local organizing committee and invited and selected speakers. We are also providing opportunities for researchers at an early career stage to obtain speaking opportunities to promote their career development. We also wish to encourage the Society to expand further and to achieve a broad representation of members across Australia and New Zealand.
Early Career researcher Support
It is increasingly important for early career researchers to develop a strong track record of conference presentations. We have included a special session in the program (Young Investigators Session) to provide early career researchers with an opportunity to present their research. Presenters will be selected from submitted abstracts with a goal of promoting quality and diversity with respect to geographical representation and gender.
Travel scholarships (up to $500) will be made available for students and early career researchers (< 5 years post PhD) located from outside the local area to attend and present their work at the conference. These will be awarded based on quality of the submitted abstract, 1 page cover letter and 2 page cv whilst mindful of achieving a diverse representation of awardees.
